Department of Biochemistry

The discipline of Biochemistry in PMAS-AAUR was initially introduced under the umbrella of the Department of Biological Sciences in 1998 and as a separate Department in 2003. In 2011, the department was up-graded to the University Institute of Biochemistry & Biotechnology (UIBB). Different degree programs offered by the department are: Ph.D, M.Phil, M.Sc. and BS in Biochemistry; PhD and M.Phil in Biotechnology and BS in Microbiology. The vision of the Department is to excel in advanced research in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology to provide means in controlling various diseases related to plant, animal and human as well as to enhance agriculture and livestock productivity.

The faculty of Biochemistry is highly qualified and competent with doctorate and post-doctoral experience from reputable National and International Universities/Institutes. All faculty members are HEC approved PhD supervisors. The faculty has research specialization in diverse fields like, Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Human Genetics and Animal Biotechnology, Cancer Genetics, Industrial Enzymology, Natural Products Chemistry, Biofuels, Protein Chemistry, Bioinformatics etc. The Department of Biochemistry has won research grants from various funding agencies and has a track record of publications in internationally reputed journals. The Department has developed active collaborations with a number of highly reputed national and international universities and research institutes.

The degree programs offered by the Department of Biochemistry are designed to provide necessary skills and knowledge in applying biochemical and molecular approaches for the solution of problems related to Health, Agriculture, Industry, and Biotechnology. The curriculum for different degree programs offered is designed based on international standards with highly competitive and advanced theoretical and practical courses. The curriculum is regularly updated keeping in view the recent advances in the relevant fields. In addition, the department also offers compulsory courses to other departments and faculties of the university. Along with regular academic activities, the Department of Biochemistry has the tradition to conduct scientific conferences/workshops/symposia/seminars to train young scientists with modern techniques in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
