Thirty members’ delegation of farmers and researchers of Baluchistan headed by Mr. Aijaz Hussain Awan, National Expert Water Resource Management visited PMAS-AAUR on February 01, 2013.
Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad, Vice Chancellor PMAS AAUR) while talking to them, said the main mandate of Arid University is to reach the stakeholders so that the results of their research and expertise may reach the end users.
He said that the Potohar and Baluchistan have rich resources of cultivation of vegetables, fruits and cut flowers. Advising the farmers to adopt innovations, the Vice Chancellor said the growers had to go for cooperative farming and try un-conventional crops, as these might fetch higher returns. Answering the question, the Vice Chancellor assured that PMAS-AAUR will open its International Center in Middle East to expand educational activities and open market for agriculture in the Middle East for better return to the local farmer. Dr. Ahmad also announced that Arid University will soon start short courses of tunnel farming and kitchen gardening for the Baluchistan farmers.
On the occasion farmers visited the research area of different departments and discussed their problems with the individual scientists. While sharing their experiences they appreciated the positive efforts of PMAS AAUR.
Mr. Aijaz Hussain Awan, National Expert Water Resource Management, in his address hoped that the present interaction shall be the beginning of a stronger interaction, which can go in the interest of the farmers and the University.
On the occasion, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Akhter Abbasi, in his presentation, briefed the delegation about the Tunnel farming. He further said that the practical approaches adopted by the farmers at their fields can enrich the faculty and the students by giving them practical know how about different problems for their research, while the farmers can benefit from the knowledge available at the University after research.
