Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) said that that agriculture is the backbone of the economy of Pakistan whereas water is essential for agriculture. He was of the view that mismanagement in production and delivery of this valuable resource has compounded the problem and are being poorly operated and maintained which is badly affecting the economy of the country.
He stated this during his visit to University Research Farm Chakwal Road, Koont on 09-02-2013. He further said that a plenty of rain water is being wasted before reaching to ultimate destination i.e. crop. He was of the opinion that efficient use of water in agriculture sector is needed and suggested the Farm administration about the techniques of water harvesting at different spots in the farm to overcome the problem of water scarcity. He further elaborated that Research Farm should be an example for the farmers and so that local farming community adopt new techniques in agriculture to get maximum output.
The Vice Chancellor appreciated the efforts of Administration of Research Farm for their research and development activities and said that Koont Farm administration should play its vital role to bridge up the gap between modern agriculture technologies and farmers to ensure food security and weed out rural poverty.
Earlier, Dr. Muhammad Ansar, Project Director, Research Farm gave presentation regarding development as well as ongoing research program. Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali, Dean Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Sarwat Naz Mirza Dean, F&RM, Mr. Akhter Hussain, Farm Manager, Mr. Muhammad Sohail, Chief Engineer Works, representative of Dean FV&AS Dr. Arfan Yousaf and In charge Veterinary hospital Dr. Hafiz Fasih were also present on the occasion.
The Vice Chancellor also visited the Farmers Market (Pvt) Ltd. a Hydroponics Plant of the University near Rawat and appreciated such kind of activities for vegetable production. He also advised to disseminate this technology to the farmers.
